Messages statistic in monitor dashboard for the whole/last is wrong

The number of messages remains the same when user filters them for this year and the last three months. Also, nothing is shown when filtered for the last year. I assume this is because messages are only stored for three months, but does it make sense to have this filtering option if the actual number can't be shown?
If here is reason for it, can we show an error message if they try to check numbers for the whole year?
